Chile, 1973: The democratically elected, socialist president Salvador Allende is overthrown by General Pinochet. A military dictatorship begins, in which Allende’s supporters are persecuted, tortured or murdered. In the GDR (East Germany), some of them receive asylum.
One of them is Luis. In the GDR Luis finds a new home. He leads a happy life with his German wife Inge and his daughter Paola. But in October 1988 this changes all of a sudden: When the military dictatorship in Chile ends, Luis loses his refugee status in the GDR. He is dismissed by his boss. From now on, Luis is considered a citizen of a capitalist foreign country in the GDR. When Luis comes under suspicion of having helped one of his work colleagues to escape to West Berlin, the situation escalates.
